Subject: Joey and the Tilt-a-Whirl!!
We caught up with Joey at the hockey game on Monday night. We had to
drive to Dallas to find him. The Devils were beating the Stars, but Joey was in
no mood to talk to. Even though he's a Jerseyite, he apparently had a lot of
money ridin' on the other team!
His name is Joey Altimari, and it was like
pullin' teeth to get him to talk about Bruce and the Joisey shore...He owns a
construction company now....and said he don't talk about the past too much.
Lives in a big house
down in Mullica Hills. We finally got him talkin' about
those summers in Asbury Park...
" I was 17 that summer, Bruce was a little bit older. I met him on the
boardwalk...I think it was in late July. He used to always hang out at the
South Pier, until he went to work for Mario's Pizza. He was one of them
dudes they taught how to flip the pizza dough, and he'd stand at the window,
twirlin' it over his head. The only problem was he had this real long hair.
He was mad, because Mario made him wear a hair net when he was workin'...
and a lot of the greasers used to give him a hard time about it...
He was a real ladie's man....Loved the women...He had no problem comin'
onto the factory girls from North Jersey, and he did pretty good with the
New York chics, So mostly he just spent the summer strummin' on his
guitar and chasin' girls around.
Bruce got fired in early August. He got caught down on the beach one
night with Mario's daughter, and that was the end of his pizza twirlin'..
After he was fired, Bruce used to come over and hang out in Little Eden
at the Tilt-a-Whirl. It used to be a popular meeting place for the kids...
I was goin' to summer school that year, majorin' in astronomy...and me
an Bruce would sit at the tilt-a-whirl and talk about the stars...He was
real interested n auroras......and made me tell him all about them
I didn't know what he was up to.....he always had his mind churnin' over
something. I couldn't keep up with the guy....
He had this great scam goin' with Madame Marie.....the fortune tellin'
lady. He'd always bring 'er food in her booth....and she would thank him
by tellin' the teenage girls that they were gonna' meet their life's love
that night, and he was gonnna be wearin' Beatle Boots and a shirt that
said, "Property of State Prison" on the back....and naturally...thats's how
Bruce was dressed..
As I was sayin', Bruce loved the ladies...and he came up with this great
"line" that summer...I've never heard better!!...He would get real serious
and tell the girl that his life was changin....he had to grow up...give up
this immature boardwalk life....grow up....be a man!! He'd cap it off by
tellin' 'em he had dreams of angels....on harleys....who appeared to him
and....(this was the best part)..he'd tell 'em.....they were so beautiful, it
looked like they had an "aurora" risin' around 'em...and then.......He'd
throw in the line.....that men have been usin' for centuries...." Love Me
Tonite!!! and I PROMISE.....I'll luv ya forever !! Well...they'd get all
goo-goo eyed, and he'd end up under the boardwalk...It worked more
often than not! Until SANDY came along that is!!
Now......SANDY was different, and Bruce knew it....Not a Turnpike girl by
any stretch of the imagination......Reekin' with class....way up there in the
big leagues......She was " Parkway " from top to bottom !! Bruce knew
that he was playin' in the big leagues...and really laid it on tryin' to
impress her. He'd buy her cotton candy.....take her down to play Skee
Ball...and do all the things with her that a Jersey boy would do to
convince a woman to "Love Him Tonite" ...Gave her a ring in late August..
.and that's when things started to fall apart...
Sandy found out....that Bruce was sneakin' into the Bronx on Saturday
nights....and hangin' out with some girl named Puerto Rican Jane...
She also discovered that he got the ring....from that machine...where
ya pick up the prizes with the little toy crane....Man !!...She was hot !!
Along about Labor Day...or maybe a few days before....Sandy cornered
me as I was headin' to work...She gave me a hundred bucks...cash money
to help her with her revenge...Bruce loved to ride the tilt-a-whirl...He was
on it all the time..even though it made him sick now and then...Sooooo
when he hopped on that night....with the C note stuffed in my socks...I hit
the " ON " lever.......and started readin' my astronomy book....and readin'
an readin' and readin'........I didn't think He was ever gonna get off !!!
I saw Sandy standin' there laffin' her head off.......hollerin' to him........
"Hay Bruce......ya promise to love me forever.....huh?.....well.....you'll
only be lovin' the side of your toilet bowl tonite.....once ya get off that
tilt-a-whirl.....You'll be spewin' till the next aurora comes around...Hay..
here come them angels on their harleys again.......see em??? by the
way....NICE SHIRT YA GOT THERE!! ......
We said goobye to Joey....after he gave us the phone number of Joe
Roberts........headin' out west next week.....to check up on Joe and Maria
