Subject: Coverin' the Last Show!!
Wayne and I woke up early on the morning of July 1st. What a day we had ahead of us!! Not only where we covering the last show of the tour, but Candy's Room had given us backstage press passes!! And we had a date lined up with twins we had met at a bowling alley in Cleveland, when we were out seein' Bobby Jean! Needless to say.....we were pumped!! Wayne spent the morning hand lettering signs he was going to hold up at the concert, hoping that Bruce would notice them, and I busied myself waxin' my ears and sharpenin' my reoportorial skills for the job ahead.
We were due to meet Darlene and Darlotta around 6pm. We had mailed them their tickets....but Wayne and I had to get to the show early, to pick up the backstage passes. Bein' fairly new in the city..we had no clue where Madison Square Garden was....it was good that the twins gave us directions to 123rd and Lexington. We found it in no time!! That's also when we found out, that MSG wasn't in Harlem after all. I could have swore they said it was!!
Needless to say....we were now runnin' late, and had to grab the first cab to go to the Garden. Shortly after our arrival, we discovered the twins had picked up our backstage passes, and we happily headed to the backstage area, relieved that they had found their way from Harlem also. We spotted them in the lounge area, with a large crowd, waiting for Bruce next to his dressing room. The security detail stopped us.....the same guys who had recently beat us up in the Meadowlands in fact. Wayne explained to em....that we were with the two girls in the bowlin' jackets, and the security people went to talk to them. They then returned.....and bounced us out into the parking lot.....with a level of force that was shocking to both of us! Making a mental note, to complain to the arena management, we decided to interview some of the folks headin' into the concert.
Our first interview......was Crazey Janey....from Long Island...
Wayne: So tell me Crazey...how many Bruce concerts have you attended?
Crazey: This will be my 147th.....since 1994....
Wayne: And what's your favorite Bruce tune?
Crazey: ahhhh......Prove it All Night....but I like Two Hearts too!
Wayne: How about Thunder Road?
Crazey: Yeah,,,,I like that......but I favor the version where he takes
two breaths after the first 18 bars.....insteand of the one breath
version...
Wayne: Well.....thats understandable....Is that the same version where he smiles at Patti.....in the first refrain??
Crazey: No Silly,,,,,thats the acoustic version!!
Wayne:...ahhhhhhh....ok Crazey...thanks for stoppin' by..enjoy the show!
We then spoke with David, from Allentown Pa., who was at his 14th concert....
Wayne: So David, what is so important about Bruce that you would travel from Allentown, to see him for the 14th time?
David: Well, he reminds me of the day, when my granmom died..I played a Bruce song for her...
Wayne: That's a beautiful thought David, do you want to share with our readers?
David: Sure...It was in late July, I guess 1982. I had just taken a new job with a bank, up in New England. I had always wanted to meet Bruce. Me and my buddies, went to a concert in Hartford, I guess it was the 12th of May. We decided to hang outside and try to meet the band. But first we went to lunch. Had a burger, fries and two cokes, and listened to some Bruce on the jukebox. We heard Hungry Heart. While we sat around the table we talked of the profound impact Bruce has had on our lives. I told them about the time in 1981, when I heard my first boot, and how i left the house that night...and just walked and walked thinking about what he had sung....and decided that i Had to meet him..so after lunch.....we realized that we had missed him. He left, while we were eating. Early the next morning, before heading home, we again decided to hang out and try to meet him. Back in 78....when i heard his first song, i had mapped out a plan in my head.....
Wayne:....ahhhhhh.....David!! your grandmother!!!
You were telling us how you played a Bruce song for her...??
David: Oh yeah.....right...well....i played Born to Run for her. She died anyway, but I think she heard it!
Wayne: I'm ahhhhhh .....sure she did David..thanks for stopping by!!
We then spoke to four different people who had seen God during Bruce concerts and two who He appeared to while watchin videos!
At that point we noticed a big commotion over by the backstage entrance. Security was in hot pursuit.....of two women, in bowling jackets, who had apparently taken a picture of Bruce...in the shower! They disappeared into the crowd. Wayne and I , decided to phone in our interviews, and then headed for our seats, ready to enjoy the remainder of our evening with the twins.
We arrived in our section.....744.....just as the lights were goin' down. The twins' seats were empty...except for an empty beer cup......and two half eaten Cinna Buns....which indicated to me.....they had left in a hurrry!! Wayne spoke with some of the surrounding crowd.....and came back upset!! panting that the twins had been mibbed by some black dude! Bein' an ex cop......Wayne immediately called the police on his cell phone.....while I tried to explain.......that it meant that their seats had been changed to the first few rows. At that point, Bruce and the band, came onstage......and the spectacle began!!
Bruce opened with "Code of Silence", followed by "My Love Will Not Let You Down". He was in great form. As "Love" wound down,,,,,Wayne held up the first of his signs. Bruce must have noticed !!! As he immediately started into "PROVE IT ALL NIGHT" !! Well, believe me, Wayne was on a roll!! He then held up his "TWO HEARTS" sign....and like magic, Bruce picked right up on it!! The band then did "Atlantic City", "Mansion on the Hill", and "The River". American Skin then got a standing ovation from the entire crowd, except for Wayne, who had taken a pee break, and two Baltimore cops in section 745.
The crowd was on its feet the entire night, especially during "E Street Shuffle" and "Lost in the Flood". It was around this time that Wayne started holding up his "Bobby Jean" sign, which is his favorite song. He took a lot of abuse from the surrounding crowd, who scoffed at him telling him that the song hasn't been played in four days...an probably never would be again. Once more Wayne proved them wrong!!!
It was right about then.....that we spotted Rosie....down on the floor! She was holding up a big sign for Bruce to see...and nodding her head, as if to say, "don't even think about it !! "...Bruce pretended he didn't see her, but we saw him mouth the words "uh-ohhhhh", and lead right into "Land Of Hopes and Dreams". Me an Wayne got kinda misty eyed, when he did "Blood Brothers".....It kinda made us think of all we've been thru the past months.....and all we still have left to do!
We headed out of the city. Now that the tour is over, our boss, Jukeboxgrad (bless her soul), has given us two days off for the July 4th weekend. Then we have to track down Maria Espinosa! Hmmmm......where is she tonight? And what happened to the twins? Wayne swears he spotted them handcuffed to a State Trooper's Ford on the way over the bridge, but I'm not sure if it was them...or not...We'll have to look them up if we ever get back to Cleveland. Someday we'll look back on this, and it will all seem funny!!
Until then!!
ROCK ON!!!
