On 9-11-01 America endured the most tragic day in its 226 year history. Terrorist attacks laid waste to the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City and badly damaged the Pentagon building in Washington, D. C. Thousands of Americans were killed, including those on airliners hijacked to fuel the attacks. We were bombarded with images of death, destruction, pain and hopelessness. Our society will never be the same again, and another piece of American innocence is gone forever.
Rising from the ashes of this tragedy however, is a story of the American spirit that is truly remarkable. Instead of panic in the streets, America experienced moments of heroism that stretched into days and weeks. Fire fighters, police officers, emergency medical workers and many others began a rescue effort that will forever be remembered in the annals of American compassion and selflessness. The true American spirit has been evident since 9-11-01, and those who perished on that tragic day are forever in our memories and prayers. People from around the world shared our grief and sent their prayers to those who were killed and those who were so tragically affected.
Members of the entertainment community, amidst the usual accusations of self-promotion, decided to conduct a telethon-benefit to assist those involved in the tragedy. Entertainers, both singers and movie stars, signed on to honor the heroes of September 11th. The concert was dubbed, "America: A Tribute to Heroes".... Included was Bruce Springsteen who kicked off the September 21st concert with the words, "This is a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters".
