Alterman leaves no doubt whatsover that he is a fan. It's a Bruce biography, complete with social commentary on the impact of Springsteen's music on his audience and the American psyche.

From Guthrie to Springsteen.

Carman examines the working world of America, and its search for social justice. He examines Whitman and Guthrie and ends with Springsteen. It's a world of the white-male working class though, there's not much diversity in our working class icons.

Cavicchi, Daniel.
Tramps Like Us: Music and Meaning
Among Springsteen Fans.

New York: Oxford University Press, 1998.
Cavicchi studies Springsteen fans, both in person and by interview, to determine why his music has the influence on their lives that it does. Though he's a fan, Cavicchi succeeds in presenting a non-partisan review of Springsteen's impact.

A collection of oral interviews concerning Springsteen's songs and their impacts on the lives of "average" Americans. Not much new here.

Cullen, James.
Born in the USA:
Bruce Springsteen and the American Tradition.

New York: Perennial, 1998.
An interesting read. Cullen portrays Springteen as a social conservative, heralding the concepts of hard work, love and family; a sort of troubador for American values.

Duffy presents Springsteen quotes in the context of certain aspects of his career. He talks about his music, his concerts, his childhood, New Jersey and his fans.
